if you want a REAL file explorer for windows, check out DirectoryOpus:
http://www.gpsoft.com.au/
it is the kind of software that - once you start using it - you'll wonder how you ever could have done without. at least that's how it was for me.
i was looking for a windows explorer replacement and i checked out most on the market. while quite a few have an impressive set of features, i have found none that comes close to directoryopus.
just four little examples:
1. it has a launch bar. completely configurable. you can place program icons there but you can also place shortcuts to drives and folders there. and - if you have files selected in a viewer pane, simply drag your selection to a program icon and the program starts with those files (can be more than one) open.
2. it has a flat view. when you hit the flat view button, all files in the current folder AND of all subfolders are listed in one view. extremely useful.
3. it has a very powerful internal macro language - sort of. with a few clicks i implemented the following function in the pop-up that comes up when you right-click on file(s): it copies the names of all selected files into the clipboard - with or without path info.
4. of course it has a dual view, i.e. you can view two folders at the same time. in addition to that it has tabs associated with each viewer pane. each tab can represent a different folder.
i could go on and on, but i guess you get the idea. it is just a very well thought-through piece of software.
also, their support is great. their response is quick and with high quality.
note:
i am NOT associeted with that company in any way. i'm just a very satisfied user. |

I've used it too. I hated the way MS Explorer would limit what you could see. You know, system or hidden files.
Good stuff. |

It looks really good. I'm happy with the one I use though, xplorer^2 :

They have a lite version you can get for free, or try the full demo for a while.
Not sure how it compares to DirectoryOpus but it does have most of the same features. |

I had Directory Opus on the Amiga and loved it, so have just bought itt for the PC and it's stupidly powerful.
It does just about everything you need and is scriptable as well for batch jobs and other tasks. I can also recommend it. Shame it was not £5 less to buy though. |
