I'm considering replacing my current news server with Astraweb. The only thing that worries me is the 1 megabit capped speed on the $10 unlimited account. My current provider doesn't cap the speed but limits me to 2 gigs total downloads per day.
Thoughts? Comments? |

| What's the problem? At 1 mbit, you'll use up your ISPs download cap in about 3 hours & 10 minutes. You could get the speed unlimited Astraweb account, but it just means you'll hit your ISP's cap faster. It's up to you do decide if saving an hour or two is worth the extra $5 per month. |

I was thinking more on the line of "per connection" speed. I understand Astrabweb will divide the number of connections equally per connection. I normally run 8 to 10 connections. At 1 megabits, you're looking at:
1 megabits ==> 125KBs
8 connections = 125KBS/8 = 15.62KBs each
10 connection = 125KBs/10 = 12.5KBs each
See where I'm coming from?
I have 5 megabits cable service that gives me a nice pipe coming in. |

Doesn't matter how many connections you use if they are restricted to one overall bandwidth. You might as well just use three or four connections.
Whether you use 1x125 kb or 10x12.5 kb you'll still get only 1 mbit from Astraweb, and you'll hit your ISP limit in just over three hours. During that time you'll have 4 mbits of bandwidth free for other, non-Astraweb connections.
Edit: When you say "your current provider" do you mean your ISP or your current news provider? If it's the latter, then the Astraweb package is different. It's unlimited on the amount you download, but is limited on the speed you can download (1 mbit only).
I'm not really sure what you're asking for here. You're going from a fast news package with limited download caps, to a slow package with no download caps. There's no problem here that I can see. |

No, not the ISP's feeble and hobbled news server. I'm trying to decide whether or not to change from my current premium server which does not throttle my speed but limits me to 2 gigs total downloads per every 24 hour cycle.
Some of the <cough>movies<cough> I'm downloading are pretty big, I like to run as many connections as possible. |

A slow connection that lets you download all day is better than a fast one that only lets you download for a couple of hours. You'll download more than 2 gigs from Astraweb even if it's only at 1 mbit.
If you're maxing out your bandwidth anyway (which in this case will be 1 mbit) then you don't need a load of connections. In fact, less connections are better - you have less network overhead, and less disk thrashing. Ideally, you want the least number of connections that can keep your 1 mbit from Astraweb saturated.
What you can do it to set the server priorities to use your ISP news server first, but to only use 2 gig per day, and then have the Astraweb server at lower priority with an unlimited download. |

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Slow and steady as opposed to quick and dirty.
Anyone have any other news server suggestions at or less than $10 per month? |
