I reckon it's a cookie issue. The site is not sending back the correct cookies at the right time. I've found things improve greatly if you link to:
http://www.newsmanpro.com/phpbb2/
instead of:
http://www.newsmanpro.com/phpbb2
(note the trailing slash). If you use the top one, you stay logged in, use the bottom one and you get logged out. Someone's broken the cookies a little bit by having inconsistencies there, I think. Because you send back or get asked for the "wrong" cookie, you lose login and view history. |

I've checked the cookie settings for the forums and they are exactly the same as they were for the old server. It's weird, I can't find anything that's different that I can see, but behavior is subtly different. We've also gotten reports that people have to login more than once to the download area before they can actually get logged in. However, when my ISP tests everything, they can find no configuration issues, and I have to admit that I don't have any either, no matter where I connect from.
I could try changing the cookie name to see if that would make any difference. Anyone think it is worth doing?

A couple of years back I reported a similar issue to Firefox. It was down to the site using two cookies, but sending them back out of sync, and thus out of WWW spec. The site would ask for the first cookie, but expect to see the second one or something like that.
The site changed the behaviour (it was one of the big UK banking sites and the FF team set them straight).

Actually, BZB, good catch on the trailing "/". Turns out, this appears to be the cause of the login issue in the download area. When you login in using the link we've been giving out, it fails and then resets the browser address to add "/" to the link. Then the next login attempt works.
We will update all of the links on the site to the forums as well as change the link we give out to registered users. Update your bookmarks!

The new cookie root is "nmp_phpbb2" instead of "nmpphpbb".

You are looking at the session cookies. There is also a long-term cookie. I think there are 3 in all.
Also, don't forget to update the bookmark you are using to connect to the forum.

My ISP just notified me that they are escalating this issue. The extra "/" on the URL catch seems to have illustrated the issue. Thanks BZB.

|

Previously, when I logged in the blurb at the top of the forum that says "You last visited on #####" would have the current time and date. This would prevent me from seeing any "New Posts" icons. I just logged in and lo and behold!!!! The blurb says "You last visited on Tue Jan 29, 2008 3:45 am" and I see "New Posts" icons!!! Yippie!!!! Hooray!!!
I hope this means that the issue is resolved. I have kept quiet and not complained since no one seemed to be having any problems except me. Good to know that I might not be crazy after all.
BTW: I always enter the forum by going thru the NMP home page. I do not jump directly to the forum. |

The link on the home page seems to be part of the problem. If you were to bookmark the forum link:
http://www.newsmanpro.com/phpbb2/
...everything would work as it used to. My ISP is still looking into the issue, so nothing has changed as of yet. I'm tempted to change the links to the forum on the home page, but I'm going to hold off until I see what the ISP says.

|
|
PHP's SessionID (the paramater being passed as part of the url) changes each time I visit the forum.
For example: The "News and Announcements" subforum's link is currently "http://newsmanpro.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=c031ee0963d77f287bc6af38a03fa8c4"
The &sid=################### value changes each time I visit the forum.
In fact, some times it is there, and some times it is not there.
The changing url for all of the links makes it impossible to tell visited links from unvisited links.
Get rid of the "sid=##########" junk. |
