This allows you to use a regular expression to exclude specific characters, strings or patterns from the message grouping algorithm.

this sounds like what I'm looking for (so that grouping ignores things like "[3/104]"), but where can I find it?

I don't see it mentioned in the online documentation when I search for "message grouping".

I don't think it actually ever made it into the Wiki...

This is a Workgroup-level exclusion, so edit the Workgroup and enter your regular expression on the Workgroup Settings tab.
