Whats your favorite web browser?
Why?
What makes it better than others?

Here's my 3 in order of most liked:

1. Firefox
2. Opera
3. Internet Explorer

Reasons to like Firefox:
1. Easier to install/update common plugins than Opera (like flash, quicktime etc). Plugins have native support and treat the browser as netscape, while you have to fiddle around a bit to make them work in opera.
2. The renderer is faster than ie's and the best its ever been for a mozilla browser, but i still note the occasional slight problem with some webpages.
3. No strings attatched browser, easy to configure/use. Good for everyone. <-- perfectly poised to steal ie's crusty undeserved crown.
4. Does a good job at keeping spyware off your computer.

Reasons to like Opera:
1. Still the fastest renderer by a small margin over Firefox.
2. Has some multiple functions like email client and rss feed reader (which i use and enjoy), irc client (which i don't use but is pretty nice) and an nntp reader which lacks a lot of functionality but probably good for text groups (i don't use). Despite all the extra functionality its not heavy on resources.
3. Almost immune to spyware.

Reasons to like Internet Explorer:
1. It works with almost every webpage in existence.

So to sum up.

Firefox should work great for everyone, easy to use etc.

Opera is for those who enjoy a little more functionality in their browser and want the fastest renderer. Can be a bumpy ride to start with because the plugins don't just simply install like they do for ie or firefox. Also you will need to choose between ads supported or register (or another option i won't mention).

Internet Explorer is for those who just want everything to work perfectly, except its very easy for ie to get screwed up because of exploits and spyware which the browser attracts like a magnet. So IE will be good while it lasts.

Personally i am quite torn between Firefox and Opera atm because i use some of Opera's additional functionality but i think Firefox may well be the way forward beyond Internet explorer (free/fast/easy and works is the key here).

Firefox, 99%!

I like everything about it besides the fact that tabbbed browsing requires an extension to work the way it should.

All of the options for extensions are amazing.

However, I just installed the upgrade for 1.0+ and it disabled all of my non-compatible 1.0 extensions. I really doubt that the minor .0.1 upgrade makes Googlebar not work.

Yeah, at the moment I'm also using Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Final.
And Mozilla Thunderbird is my e-mail guy...

I have a suggestion though, you might want to look at Avant Browser
http://www.avantbrowser.com/
which is a IE based browser, offering the compatibility where you need it. Very Happy

Ha, so you are a FireFork, then???
I also installed an extension to enhance the tab functionality.
It's called "Tab Clicking Options" and you find it at http://twanno.mozdev.org/

Outlook web access, as in outlook express hyperlinks?

Outlook/express etc is just as dangerous internet explorer if you are concerned at all about spyware/trojans/viruses.

You might say thats ok i have a good anti virus, but imo all anti viruses suck, you WILL get caught out 1 day if you continue to use M$ shit. I haven't used an av for 6 years, mostly good web sense keeps viruses off my computer.

No, Outlook Web Access is a method of accessing your (usually corporate) email server when out of the office. If your email server is Microsoft Exchange then you can install an OWA (Outlook Web Access) server on a Win2K/Win2K3 server running IIS. You can then browse to it from an internet browser anywhere else.

It's just like any other webmail service (HotMail and all other ISP's etc) except that the interface is very similar to Outlook so it's a consisitent look and feel.

Unfortunately, Firefox doesn't seem to work very well with it - it displays stuff in the wrong places. But then it would do, since MS wrote OWA to work only with IE didn't they!!! Laughing

These are better two words: Power Off

Anyway,
Spybot, Search and Destroy (http://www.spybot.info/en/)
and SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/)
are both excellent free guardians for any web browser.

In principle i already have the same thing, my gf's computer hosts my connection, which gives my computer the same level of protection as a hardware firewall. Downside is her computer is not so well protected.

I do plan to buy a router at some point.

Power off works for me too Very Happy

You could consider changing your email server (If thats an option), i'm sure theres others and also with built in web access with global browser compatibility.

The IE based tabbed browser that most of us in the know have been using for the last 2+ years is,

Maxthon - http://www.maxthon.com/

It's nice Smile

My one main grudge of Firefox is that is stores settings in c:\docs and settings\..\.. Now why a program that is so non m$oft would start use that 'orrible directory and not let the user change the location of some of its stored settings is beyond me. In fact I think I'm gonna have to send a few emails to the FireFox team to let em know!!!

Anyway I've no probs with Maxthon so I'll just stick with it...

Not the program is "so non M$osft", but the users are...
It looks to me like Firefox is using the account facilities that are provided by the operating system.

Also, I created a user.js file wich tells all the members in the Mozilla family where to find certain settings.
For example:
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file", "DHmmm\<my own path>\\bookmarks.html");

I prefer Avant Browser over the former myIE2. Very Happy
