Kill Filters

print

While the registered version of NewsMan Pro offers Automation Rules to allow for filtering of unwanted messages, the Freeware version does not support Automation Rules. For users of the Freeware version, there is a Kill Filter feature that performs some basic filtering. Messages that match your Kill Filters can be marked read or deleted, based on the setting you select on the Kill Filters maintenance dialog.

The Kill Filter maintenance dialog displays all of the kill filters that you have created. Kill filter filtering uses the same algorithm used by the message list filtering system, so you can create very sophisticated kill filters even without all of the additional filter elements that are available in the Automation Rules.

You can create new kill filters by clicking the "New" button in the maintenance dialog, or use the message list context menu to automatically create a kill filter using information available in the currently selected message:

Either method will display the Kill Filter Editor:

Adjust the various elements of your new kill filter and click "OK" to save it.

Kill Filter Performance
Kill Filters are applied whenever a Workgroup or newsgroup is loaded into the message list. Therefore, the more kill filters you create, the more processing is required while loading the message list. For this reason, we highly recommend that you craft your kill filters carefully so that you can minimize the number of filters. If you are using the registered version of Newsman Pro, we strongly urge you to use the Automation Rule system. Not only is this more powerful, but the processing is done as new headers are retrieved rather than when loading the message list. This method is much more efficient and you can have many more Automation Rules than Kill Filters without any performance penalty.
