Overview

NewsMan Pro uses a resizable pane layout to provide quick access to the various parts of the system. Layouts can be saved and recalled by using the Layouts tool window. Tool windows can be hidden or docked to any available docking area. Tool window positions are not saved with the Layouts. However, they are saved between sessions.

Navigating the Newsman Pro Interface
The Navigation Pane (upper left-hand pane) allows you to quickly move between the various parts of Newsman Pro by clicking on the desired item. In addition, you can right-click on an item and access a subset of the functions that are available for that item.

Each of the items shown in the Navigation pane represent various functions and features that are available in Newsman Pro.

The folders are Workgroups that can contain an unlimited number of individual newsgroups. Using these Workgroups, you can browse ALL of the messages in the various game related newsgroups at once by browsing the parent Workgroup “Gaming Groups”. You may also view the messages in a single newsgroup by clicking the newsgroup itself.

A special Workgroup named "Imported Messages" contains messages that were imported from an NZB file.

A Workgroup or newsgroup in Bold indicates that it contains unread messages.

Saved Item folders are created by you to store messages outside of a Workgroup, for special processing or simply to archive message for later use.

The Queue item will switch the view to display the Queue Manager.

The Servers, Automation and Scheduler items will display the interfaces used to maintain these items when clicked.

The view panes
Clicking an item in the Navigation Pane will cause Newsman Pro to display that item’s view in the upper right-hand pane.

In this image, the Workgroup “Delphi Programming” has been expanded and a single newsgroup has been opened. You can browse all of the messages in a Workgroup (all newsgroup subscriptions at once) or browse individual newsgroups.

…and here, the “Servers” item was selected.

Each view has a toolbar across the top that gives quick access to most of the functions that are available in that particular view...

In addition, every view also contains a context-menu that can be accessed by right-clicking on the items displayed within each view...

The view panes are described below:
  • Servers - Displays all news servers. Contains functions to add, edit and delete news servers.
  • Workgroups - Displays all Workgroups (virtual groups that contain your Newsgroup subscriptions), Folders and a special folder named "Trash".
  • Message View - Displays the messages for the current Workgroup or Newsgroup. This view contains another pane to view the contents of a message.
  • Queue - Displays the current contents of the Queue and provides access to the Queue management functions.
  • Automation - Displays Automation rules for each Workgroup.
  • Scheduler - Displays Scheduled Tasks.
  • Downloaded Files - Displays files that have been downloaded and their current save status. Files can also be "Launched" from this interface.
  • Event Log - Records events that occur in many of the subsystem contained within Newsman Pro.
  • Error Log - Records any program or database errors that may occur.

Workgroups and Folders
A workgroup is a logical folder that you create. It is where the Newsgroups that you subscribe to are stored. A Workgroup can contain an unlimited number of subscribed Newsgroups and these Newsgroups can be from any of your news servers. The Workgroup concept makes it easy to browse similar Newsgroups by selecting the Workgroup when you browse messages. All messages for every Newsgroup in the Workgroup will be displayed together as if they were in a single Newsgroup. You can always view messages for an individual Newsgroup by expanding the Workgroup and selecting the Newsgroup you want to view.

A Folder is a special Workgroup. It doesn’t contain any Newsgroup subscriptions. Instead, while you browse messages, you can move messages from the Workgroup or Newsgroup into one of these Folders. You can use these Folders to store messages for later download, or to save items that you just don’t want to see when you browse your other messages. When you browse the contents of one of these Folders, you can perform any action that you would within a normal Workgroup or Newsgroup such as Queue, Save, Delete etc…

The Queue
The Queue is where all downloading actions are processed. To view the Queue, select the "Queue" item from the Navigator. Each line in the Queue represents a single task that Newsman will perform. Multi-part messages are displayed as a single job. Each part is downloaded separately and combined once all of the parts have been retrieved. To see the individual parts for a multi-part job, double-click the job you are interested in.

Pane Sizers (splitters)
Each pane has a sizer that can be used to resize the pane. In addition, each sizer contains a “minimize/restore” button that can be used to quickly hide a pane and then restore it to its last position...
