NewsMan uses Workgroups to combine your subscriptions for related newsgroups into a single "virtual newsgroup". These Workgroups allow you to browse all of the messages from these newsgroups all at once. It truly speeds up the process of browsing messages to find what you are looking for. Newsman also calculates expiry estimates based on your usage and experience in order to determine in what order articles should be downloaded in the Queue. This can help prevent missing an article that is soon to expire.
Creating a new Workgroup
Click on the "New" button to create a new Workgroup. The Workgroup editor will appear...
Select the server you want to use from the combo-box and Newsman will load the group list for that server. If you have not retrieved the group list for the server, click "Get All ". To retrieve the entire group list again, click "Refresh". Click "Get New" to get any new newsgroups that have been added to the server since you last updated the group list. If you only want to follow a limited set of newsgroups, you can manually add these groups to the server list by clicking "Custom".
You can combine newsgroups from different servers by changing the current server and adding any desired newsgroups to the subscription list. It is not necessary to add the same newsgroup from each of your servers. Use the server with the best completion and retention and Newsman Pro will get headers from that server. When using server priorities, any server that has a priority assigned will be used for body retrieval.
Workgroup Settings
You can override the default download folders defined in Settings by specifying a destination folder for the Workgroup. Any attachments downloaded will be saved to the folder you select.
The
Message Pane options allow you to tell Newsman what to do with the pane when you browse messages in this Workgroup:
- Leave the pane alone - just what it says
- Open pane when browsing - Newsman will always open the message pane when you open the Workgroup. This can be useful when browsing text groups.
- Open the pane when the message is double-clicked - Newsman will open the pane when you double-click a message.
- Close the pane when browsing - Newsman will close the pane when you open the Workgroup.
You can also set the pane to automatically zoom to full screen when using options 2 and 3.
Crosspost Filtering
This is a per-Workgroup setting that tells Newsman Pro to reject headers if they are crossposted to more than the specified number of newsgroups. To enable crosspost filtering for header retrieved in a Workgroup, set the "reject" value to a number greater than "0".
Editing a Workgroup
To edit a Workgroup after it has been created, select the Workgroup to be edited in the Navigator or Workgroups View, right-click and select "Edit Workgroup". In the workgroups View, you can also use the toolbar "Edit" button to edit the currently selected Workgroup. Newsgroup subscriptions can be moved from one Workgroup to another by expanding the Workgroup, select the newsgroup to move and drag it to the new Workgroup.
